Heatwaves are ravaging through Texas as summer rears its head around the corner. You set your air conditioning on a cool 68 degrees and call it a night. You wake up in the middle of the night, your home is hot and humid, and you are absolutely drenched in sweat and wondering what is going on with your air conditioning. Your groggy self gets out of bed and walks to the thermostat to find that it had adjusted itself to 78 degrees overnight! What is going on, you ask? The Texas thermostat takeover has begun!

Texas Energy Shortage Crisis

As outside temperatures begin to rise above the 90s, Texas is currently facing an energy shortage crisis. The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) recommends and urges Texas residents to raise their thermostats to 78 degrees in order to help conserve energy.

We, at Titan Air Solutions, also urge our customers to help conserve energy if they can. Though 78 degrees may be a bit much for some, the best way to help is to turn up your thermostat a few degrees to help reduce the demands on the energy grid and prevent rolling blackouts in the future.

Texas Power Companies Take Remote Control Over Thermostats

In the midst of the energy shortage crisis, some Texas residents have discovered that their smart thermostats were being remotely raised by their power companies without their knowledge. It has since been discovered that the remote control was given to the power companies via an energy saver program that users enrolled in. Within the fine print of the energy saver program agreement, users agreed to give remote access to power companies in order to make brief and limited adjustments to the smart thermostats during peak demand times. However, those who do not wish to give remote control to the power companies can opt out of the programs.

Though this energy crisis is not over yet, Texas residents can rest assured that they can get back full control over their smart thermostats. If you have a smart thermostat and are not sure if you are enrolled in an energy saver program, checking with your power company might be a good idea. And remember to always read the fine print when signing up for any program with your power company!
